Accountability Breeds Response-ablity

Accountability Breeds Response-ability

"A team holding themselves accountable to nobody is not ought to be trusted by anybody...."

This is a story that is true for many organizations that don’t promote the concept of ownership and accountability. Accountability is about follow-through and doing what you said you would do. It’s recognising that other team members are dependent on the results of your work. It’s about taking responsibility for results and not assuming it’s someone else’s responsibility. It is about People passing the bug onto others rather than taking responsibility for themselves. It shows why teamwork, communication and leadership are important in doing any work. Strenghtening accountability across the breadth of an organisation requires a range of reforms.

Who's job it is, Anybody ?

“This is a story of four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. So, Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

Why change in attitude is self inflicted to a greater extent ?

I feel the root cause why change in attitude is self inflicted is because most of us just make excuses or playing the blame game. Such self inflicted wounds kills leadership qualities. That is the reason why you can just see the designation of people as a manager or a supervisor but they lack capabilities for such designation. The best way to relate is a mediocre public sector companies. The owner of Public Sector Undertakings is Government are not proactively involved in regulating change like Narayana Murthy or Elon Musk - the so called "Management People". Infact they do not want to incur the wrath of the owners, lest they be removed from their posts.

Example: BSNL was once generating profits of around 10,000 crore annually but reluctant to change has now left the PSU nowhere in the industry. In 2016, NITI Aayog, the think tank of the center has added BSNL in the list of loss making PSUs. They have also proposed the closure of BSNL, instead of reviving the ailing PSU. While the competitors are now looking at 5G spectrum, BSNL was systematically kept away from even going for 4G.

There are two primary choices -  to accept the conditions as they exist or accept the responsibilty for changing them. By not accepting personal responsibility for our circumstances, we greatly reduce the power to change them. All great changes are preceded by chaos.
